With the debut of the 2023 Colorado lineup on Thursday, Chevrolet is rekindling the midsize truck wars. These trucks are more popular than ever, and the Colorado is turning up the heat with new engines, improved technology, and an overall better look.
Electric Pickup Trucks Available In 2023 And Beyond
With that in mind, let’s see how the new Colorado compares to its main rivals: the Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Each truck has many different configurations, so we try to keep things as harmonious as possible in every part. But as you can see, some trucks have different advantages over others.
While Ford, Nissan and Toyota offer their trucks in various cab and bed lengths, Chevy only offers the Colorado in a single crew cab and short bed. And since Honda and Jeep only sell their trucks with similar styling, we’ll stick with that when looking at overall exterior and interior dimensions.
Also, something to keep in mind: Chevy only shows the width of the Colorado, including mirrors, not including the standard vehicle width. That’s why Chevy’s numbers are the highest.

This is where things get a little tricky. Chevy offers a single engine and transmission in the 2023 Colorado with three power levels depending on trim. Other trucks have a choice of engines, and only the Gladiator and Tacoma can be purchased with a manual transmission.
To make things as straightforward as possible, we’ll round up the engines that perform best on paper. Bonus points go to Jeep for adding a diesel option, but we’ll have to leave that engine out for now.
Some trucks are more off-road capable than others, so it’s pretty tough. We let each truck do what it does best by listing the trim level measurements it has most. That’s a small advantage for trucks like the Colorado ZR2, Gladiator Rubicon, and Tacoma TRD Pro, which can’t quite match the Ranger Tremor and Frontier Pro-4X. Oh, and if you’re wondering why the Ridgeline isn’t on this list, it’s because it’s not really an off-road version, so better leave the Honda alone.

It wouldn’t be a truck comparison without towing and hauling. And to make it as fair as possible, we’re going with the max specs that match the engine options mentioned above.
All of these trucks offer a full suite of driver-assistance technologies, including blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control. Some trucks come with more standard equipment than others, and no midsize truck offers advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems like General Motors’ Super Cruise.
On the multimedia front, all trucks except the Ford Ranger come standard with a full-size touchscreen infotainment system. (The base Ranger has a 3.5-inch LCD in the center.) Chevy wins here, though, with a standard 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a center 11.3-inch touchscreen.

Chevrolet has yet to reveal pricing for the Colorado, so we’ll leave it at that for now. Otherwise, this is the base MSRP listed on the manufacturer’s consumer site, including destination fees. If you’re wondering why the Gladiator and Ridgeline are so much more expensive than the others, it’s because they have a higher level of equipment. Midsize trucks may not get as much attention as popular full-size trucks, but the class is full of powerful and capable trucks from major manufacturers. General Motors currently has two players: the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon. Earlier this year, Chevy announced the all-new Colorado for 2023. Now it’s Canyon’s turn, as GMC unveiled a new 2023 truck for 2023. A new AT4X off-road trim level joins the 2023 model year, and all versions get it. updated styling, new technology and more safety features.
The Canyon competes with the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Complicating matters is the fact that two new compact pickups are coming out in 2022: the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz. To make matters worse, the Rivian R1T is an electric truck of the same size, although it costs more than the GMC.
GMC refined the exterior of the 2023 Canyon with lines and positioning that bring it closer to the profile of the full-size Sierra 1500. The front now features larger truck C-shaped grille accents, and the AT4X 1 Edition features tow bars and other off-road equipment.

The new Canyon is taller and wider than the previous model. GMC says the changes offer better off-road capability with steeper approaches and better departure and escape angles. A steeper approach to the canyon and aimed off-road resulted in a change in exterior dimensions. GMC removed the front air dam, increasing the lift of the truck. The automaker is also simplifying body options for 2023, leaving only the short bed and crew cab options.
The AT4X trim has undercarriage plates, with guards for the transfer case and rocker arm. It also rides on a hefty 3-inch factory lift with 10.7 inches of ground clearance.
GMC completely updated the Canyon’s interior, and each trim level of the 2023 Canyon has a unique interior theme. GMC says no two trims are the same, noting that each has its own “unique identity”. The top Denali trim level features laser-etched wood trim and leather upholstery, while the rugged AT4X features exclusive black and white interior trim.
Ford Lineup Overview: Raptor R, New Mustang, And More
The large central touchscreen comes with a digital instrument cluster, and the simplistic ergonomics of the previous truck seem to have been discontinued. A sunroof is also available for the first time.
The Canyon will get a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder for 2023. Like Chevy, GMC offered a V6 and a diesel for the previous model year, but both divisions are cutting engine offerings for 2023. The GMC is a single 4 cylinder, single power train available in a variety of power outputs. GMC described the AT4X’s engine, noting that it produces 430 lb-ft of torque. If the Chevrolet produces the same horsepower as its counterpart, the engine produces 310 horsepower.
GMC did not provide engine output numbers for other Canyon variants, but a look at the Chevy Colorado provides some clues. Therefore, the base configuration will have 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, while the middle “plus” variant will have 310 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.
Future Trucks: The Best New Pickup Trucks
The Canyon AT4X is equipped with a 3-inch lift, giving the truck 10.7 inches of ground clearance. Another detail is the 9.6-inch, which offers excellent angles for approaching, exiting and separating the canyon. The AT4X also features DSSV Multimatic damping and an electronic front/rear locking differential. Four drive modes offer off-road, off-road, normal and trailer settings. The AT4X trim gets an exclusive Baja mode that sets the truck up for high-speed off-road driving.
Many pickup trucks lack the standard safety equipment buyers expect from family cars and SUVs, but GMC is upping the ante for 2023 with a standard suite of ADAS. The GMC Pro Safety Package includes:
All three available packages offer additional safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, an HD camera system, rear cross-traffic braking and rear cross-traffic alert.
Lordstown Endurance Electric Pickup Is Up And Running
There’s an 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It comes with an 8-inch partially digital cluster as standard, but an 11-inch fully digital cluster is available with a 6.3-inch bezel. A Bose 7-speaker system is standard on AT4X and Denali trims; is optional for AT4 equipment.
The 2023 GMC Canyon competes in a crowded field that includes the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma. Chevrolet also recently updated the Colorado, offering a cheaper, cheaper alternative to the Canyon. The Toyota Tacoma is getting old, but updates are coming soon. Updates to the Ford Ranger are also coming soon, so the GMC will soon have more competition.
