2023 New York Marathon – Starting with just 55 finishers running around Central Park, the New York Marathon has grown to become one of the most popular marathons around the world. The original races were nothing more than frequent jaunts through Central Park, but since the 1970s, when it was built, the route has expanded to show more of New York’s character and happiness.
The new course runs through five different New York City boroughs, and it is now the largest marathon in the world, with more than 50,000 participants each year. In the course next to the Boston Marathon and the Chicago Marathon, it is considered one of the most important marathons in the United States, attracting people from all over the world to compete. The new course allows those who have never seen the Big Apple to pedal through five different parts of the city and beyond. It is held on the first Sunday of November each year and is a competition open to both amateurs and professional athletes.

As the competition is prestigious and anonymous, the contribution is based on a lottery, making it a unique event. Members of the NYRR have priority when they gain admission by meeting the qualifications, they are guaranteed a seat, or they can receive a nomination by participating in the labor organization.

The marathon starts on Staten Island, in Fort Wadsworth, near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. After descending from the bridge, the course winds through Brooklyn, mostly between Fourth Avenue and Bedford Avenue, for about 11 miles (18 km). Contestants come from many neighborhoods including: Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg and Greenpoint. At 21.1 km, runners cross the Pulaski Bridge, marking the halfway point of the race, and enter Long Island City, Queens.
After about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) in Queens, runners cross the East River on the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan. It is at this point in the race that many runners begin to tire, as the climb to the bridge is considered one of the most difficult points of the marathon. Reaching Manhattan after about 10 miles, the race continued north on First Avenue, then crossed into the Bronx on the Willis Avenue Bridge for a mile before returning to Manhattan on the Madison Avenue Bridge. It then continued south through Harlem to Fifth Avenue and to Central Park. At the southern end of the park, the race continues through Central Park South, where thousands of spectators cheer on the race for the final mile. At Columbus Circle, the race re-enters the park and ends outside Tavern on the Green.
Competition information is available on the event’s official website or from publicly available sources. Be sure to check the latest race information on the official website.
