Cambodian New Year 2023 California – For the second year in a row, Stockton Mahal’s Cambodian New Year celebration has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, temple leaders said.
The annual celebration, which falls on April 13 this year, draws people from all over the United States to celebrate the new year in 2021, the Year of the Ox. It is one of the most important holidays of the year for Cambodians along with Pchum Ben. Oktoberfest where they honor their ancestors.

Lee In, a board member and publicist at Wat Dhammaram Buddhist temple, said: “The celebration will be suspended again this year to ensure (their) well-being and safety for our guests and staff is our top priority.”

“The temple is working with local health authorities and will exercise extreme caution and strictly follow the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” he said. “On behalf of Wat Dhammararam Buddhist Association Inc., we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The South Stockton Temple is a spiritual home for the thousands of Cambodians who live in the community, and the annual celebration, held amid colorful Buddhist statues, attracts 15,000 or more people to experience Cambodian culture and music and enjoy Khmer delicacies.
Last year, the 90 colorful statues that tell the story of the Buddha stood alone and silent at the temple at 3732 E. Wadumadu Road, undisturbed by people and families taking pictures at the annual celebration. The plague took a heavy toll on the temple, draining its financial resources and forcing its leaders to scale back plans for an ambitious towering structure called Heaven, where people could gather, study and pray. Temple leaders have new hope. The party of the year may be renewed next year.
Cambodian New Year Parade Resumes In Long Beach After 3 Year Hiatus
The San Joaquin Asparagus Festival, which was canceled last year due to COVID-19, will be held this year as San Joaquin Asparagus Days, organizers said.
The festival, including the popular Asparagus Alley, will be held May 13-16 at 99 Stockton Speedway, 4105 N. The Nozetti Group said in a statement that it will be held on Wilson Way.

A group of young dancers dressed in bright green and red silk performed the traditional “blessing dance” that marks the start of every Cambodian holiday, throwing pink and yellow rose petals in the middle of the street to bring good luck. Blessings to the crowd.
In the heart of the ethnic area along Anaheim Street, the parade has long been a cultural point of pride for the community. But fundraising and logistical problems forced the festival into bankruptcy two years ago, and organizers struggled to fulfill their promise to make 2014 the Year of the Horse.

The Cambodian New Year, which runs from April 13 to 15 this year, is in the Hindu calendar and traditionally marks the end of the rice harvest season. For Long Beach’s Cambodian community, the country’s largest, it has become a signature event that celebrates the country’s rich traditions and brings positive energy to many who immigrated to America because of the pain of war.
“It’s innovation,” Nett said. “It’s one of the ways we can revive ourselves and regain our dignity” after decades of pain.

Net and his team began looking for sponsors months ago for the parade, which will be funded entirely by donations from local businesses and individuals.
Three months ago, the organizers had no licenses and were still thousands of dollars short. Finally, with last-minute donations, they were able to move.

Cambodia’s New Year parade has had no shortage of challenges over the years. Back in 2005, when the event was first held, leaders originally planned the commemoration for April 17, the 30th anniversary of the takeover of Cambodia’s brutal Khmer regime and a day of many painful memories.

Protests throughout the day divided the community, which was mostly made up of survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide, and the organizers finally decided.
Another conflict erupted a few years later when many rejected an invitation from a high-ranking Cambodian official whose ruling party was accused of human rights abuses. In 2009, parade costs nearly doubled after the city stopped subsidizing police and firefighters at the event.
The tight-knit Cambodian Coordination Council used money from the popular New Year festival, which charges an entry fee, to pay for the parade.

“It’s a big shock that it didn’t happen,” said Susan Needham, a professor of anthropology at Cal State Dominguez Hills who has studied Cambodian society for 25 years.
For the past six years, Needham has helped organize the Cambodia Cultural Festival, which features ancient Cambodian arts such as giant leather shadow puppets and Cambodian martial arts that were banned and nearly eradicated during the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror. But, Needham says, the parade has a special meaning for Cambodian Americans.
“The parade makes a presence statement … that Cambodians really have a place in Long Beach and have made a significant impact on Long Beach,” Needham said.

On the third day of the new year, Buddhists wash Buddha images with scented water. This cleaning is done to ensure that Cambodia gets all the water it needs for the coming year.
