The kitchen is headed by Executive Chef Michael Honizen, formerly of the Ford Fry Restaurant Group. Hoeneisen relies on its relationships with local farmers to deliver unique flavors inspired by natural ingredients – from homemade tortillas and salsa to hourly fresh pico de gallo. The restaurant features authentic Tex-Mex food with a North Carolina twist, butcher, cure, and in-house smoking. In addition to dining, the entire Mas Amor menu is available to go.
“Mas Amor’s menu offers something for everyone and is perfect for hanging out with friends, lunches, family dinners, and everything in between,” says Rob Lackey, CEO/Partner at Imagine One. “All of the restaurants are fun, fresh, and colorful, serving up standouts like wood-fired fajitas and homemade tortillas.”
Among the items on the menu are street corn made with roasted corn, cotija cheese, cilantro, and chipotle aioli; chili rellenos: traditional, crunchy poblano peppers, seasonal vegetables, black beans, mixed cheese, and ranchero salsa; and Barbacoa Tacos: three corn tortillas stuffed with slow-cooked brisket, chico salad, guacamole and lime, served with charro beans.

The fun, creative and fun atmosphere will provide a memorable experience for all.”
The bar’s menu features traditional and seasonal margaritas, as well as handcrafted cocktails, all made with fresh fruits and ingredients. Offerings include the Pineapple Cilantro Margarita made with mezcal, fresh pineapple, cilantro, and agave with a spicy tagine edge; frozen mango margarita with fresh mango puree, lonazol blanco tequila, grand marnier, fresh lime and agave; and a Manhattan Mexicana with bourbon, blood orange, chile and mole refreshments. In addition, the menu focuses on a variety of tequilas that can be ordered on their own or as part of a flight.
“Mas Amor is an incredibly welcome addition to the Hickory restaurant scene,” says Meg Locke, owner and former partner of Highland Avenue. “We offer a variety of fresh food and beverages, and we look forward to a warm welcome from the community.”

Mas Amor’s design was inspired by the Riviera Maya in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Chic and modern, chic and modern, the decor and design reflect Chef Michael’s color palette. The oak and walnut grill is the centerpiece of the restaurant. Indigo Road Hospitality has taken up this issue in collaboration with Imagine One Hospitality.
“It has been a pleasure working with the Imagine One Hospitality team to open Mas Amor,” says Steve Ballmer, founder of Indigo Road. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring Hickory to this restaurant with exceptional cuisine and exceptional hospitality.”

The Conover site had seen such success in its first year, and the owners knew another site was right for them. Kelly Heizer, one of four partners in the project, began searching for homes between Hickory and Morganton in 2020.
Last year, the location opened in the former Nagano Japanese restaurant building at 1825 N. Center St. in hickory. Heizer said he knew it was the right place.
“The main reason I open here is because I have people who live in Conover who no longer eat [at Fresh Chef] because they’re so busy,” Heizer said. “About 50% of our customers are hickory, so now they can come here.”

Heizer has spoken from the 180 restaurants, which have been remodeled and updated since Heizer started in November 2021. He said the locations are much larger than other Fresh Cook locations, which seat more than 100 people.
To take care of the larger space, the restaurant is divided into several areas: a communal patio, an interior with a bar, a main dining room and a private dining room.
An inner courtyard that welcomes customers as they enter. Heizer built a wooden pergola to cover the common living area next to the bar.

The site is different from Conover’s, Heizer said, but Heizer thinks the Hickory community might enjoy it.
A wall separates the patio from the main bar and restaurant area, Heizer said, and it’s a bright, quiet space. He anticipates dinners, hour-long meetings between friends, and quick lunches in the community.
The private room is far from the restaurant. It will not be open for several weeks. The restaurant’s main dining room opened in mid-February.

Preparing for the opening, Heizer said, was easy. About a third of the staff at the new restaurant came from the Conover location, so there are people with experience on hand to mentor the new hires.
Heizer employees often credit their success with the Conover facility. He said this is food.
“That’s what attracted me—everything is new,” he said. “It takes a rich concept and brings it to a more casual restaurant. You can walk in here in jeans and a T-shirt. It offers a little something for everyone.”

He said that Hickory’s would not be Heizer’s last. He plans to continue searching for a new place.
“(I will open more) as soon as I can,” he said. “As long as I can keep hiring good people, I will keep opening restaurants.”
