Diwali will be a public school holiday in New York City in 2023, and Mayor Eric Adams said the city is sending a message about the importance of inclusion and encouraging children to learn about the festival of lights in an “anticipated” movement.

Joined by New York Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar and New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, Adams said she “learned a lot” about Diwali and its meaning during conversations on the campaign trail Thursday.

By declaring Diwali a holiday in New York City schools, “we wanted to send a strong and clear message to the countless people who recognize this festive season.

“At the same time, this is a teaching moment because once we recognize Diwali, we will encourage children to learn about Diwali. Let them start talking about the meaning of celebrating the festival of lights and how to shine light in yourself.”
India’s Consul General in New York Randhir Jaiswal thanked Mr. Adams for making Diwali a school holiday.
“This is a long-standing work of the Indian-American community. This recognition gives a deeper meaning to the diversity and pluralism of New York, allowing people from all walks of life to learn about, celebrate and enjoy the spirit and heritage of India,” he said.

“I’m proud that the time has come,” said Ms. Rajkumar, the first South Asian American woman elected to public office in New York. It’s time to recognize the more than 2,000,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.
Mr Adams said: “When we’re dealing with so much darkness around us, we don’t notice the light around us. When we take this time to recognize Diwali, we’re recognizing the light within, the light that can clearly dispel the darkness, so that’s really important.”
“We do it with other days and other cultures. Saying we see you is a long time coming, we recognize you with Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist students and communities. It’s important to include this city, and this is our chance to say it out loud.

Over the years, there have been increasing calls from the Hindu community to declare Diwali as a school holiday, as hundreds of thousands of Indians live in the region. Once the laws are passed, Diwali will be a school holiday in New York starting next year.
Ms. Rajkumar said people don’t have enough room in New York’s school calendar for Diwali school holidays. This week, Rajkumar introduced legislation that would put Diwali on the school calendar in the state capital. His legislation would abolish the “obscure and outdated” Jubilee Day that originated in the 19th century and replace it with Diwali, which is “celebrated by an increasing number of New Yorkers.”
“When that happens, the New York Department of Education will be able to create a Diwali holiday on the school calendar,” he said, introducing a bill that would include new South Asian and Indo-Caribbean schools. New Yorkers sit at the table.

New York state education law requires at least 180 days of schooling. However, another holiday cannot be created in the school calendar to meet this 180-day minimum requirement.
Ms Rajkumar said her rules would make Diwali a school holiday, while meeting the minimum 180-day requirement for school counseling days so that no one observes the outdated jubilee school holiday.
He thanked Mr. Adams for his help and said that it was the first time that the mayor had adopted Diwali as a school holiday.

“For more than two decades, South Asians and Indo-Caribbeans in New York City have fought for the school holiday of Diwali. I stand on the shoulders of those guards. Now we are finally going to achieve this goal,” he said.
“Next week we celebrate Diwali, the celebration of good over evil, light over darkness, human triumph, Rama’s victory over evil. We celebrate the principles of faith, harmony, love and tolerance for all New Yorkers.
“The same Indian principles that inspired America’s greatest civil rights hero, Martin Luther King, Jr., are celebrated in our culture in our nation’s civil rights tradition. The sky is the limit for our community,” he said.

According to Mr. Banks, New York is cosmopolitan, and children from all communities and backgrounds go to school here.
“And it’s important to respect and recognize all our young people. Thus, welcoming Diwali is another opportunity to celebrate, encourage and honor the youth, their family and their faith. It’s important to celebrate the light, the triumph of light over darkness,” Banks said.
